Ancient History PhD candidate, Andrew Bayliss, will soon be in
Athens as the only Australian, and one of only a few worldwide,
to be selected this year for a Studentship to the prestigious British
School in Athens.
Andrew's award will see him conduct a detailed investigation of
the Athenian military and its personnel in the early Hellenistic
period. He will be in Greece for one academic year starting from
October.
This project will supplement the research Andrew has already undertaken
for his PhD topic titled Athens Under Macedonian Domination:
Athenian Politics and Politicians from the Lamian War to the Chremonidean
War.
The British School in Athens offers only a few studentships each
year. The School is the primary centre of British and Irish research
in Greece for resident and visiting scholars, and is a hub of international
research through its program of seminars and conferences.
"I was quite surprised and delighted when I got news of the studentship
and so was my supervisor, Dr David Phillips," says Andrew, who credits
Phillips and the late Dr Jim Fitzgerald, from Macquarie's Department
of Education, with his success.
