Members of the Macquarie University community, past and present, gathered last month for the opening of the refurbished Lincoln Student Services Building named in honour of Macquarie's Emeritus Deputy Chancellor, Dr John Lincoln.

Four years ago, the decision was made to refit and convert what used to be the home of the University administration into a new and welcoming student services building. It was also decided to name the building in honour of Dr Lincoln, a former NSW District Court Judge, and Deputy Chancellor of the University from 1976 until 2000.

The building was originally conceived as one of an important group of central buildings at the University, with the Library to the west and the Union (now SAM) Building to the north. When it was completed in 1972 the Lincoln Building housed the University administration and Council chamber up until 1998, when the executive moved to the new building at E11A. Dr Lincoln was a regular visitor to the building during the quarter century it housed the University Council chamber.

Dr Lincoln has made a long and outstanding contribution to Macquarie University, dating back to the committee that established the University, which he chaired from 1958-64. Dr Lincoln's late wife, Joan, typed the submission he wrote in 1958 proposing that Sydney's third university be established in the north of the city.

He remains a member of the University Council and last year was granted the title of Emeritus Deputy Chancellor.
