A remedial reading program developed by Macquarie University literacy experts will play a key role in the $12m education component of the welfare reform trials recently announced by Minister for Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Mal Brough. The program, Making Up Lost Time In Literacy (MULTILIT) was developed by Professor Kevin Wheldall and Dr Robyn Beaman of the Macquarie University Special Education Centre and is a method of teaching reading based upon developing phonic skills.
Students can now study Macquarie University programs in the city, as Macquarie City College (MQC) commenced teaching at its York Street premises in mid July. MQC has begun its teaching program with a small cohort of Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) students, who will benefit from the recent CPA Australia accreditation of its program.
A new campus library, the likes of which has never been seen before in the Australian higher education sector, will be built at Macquarie University by 2010. The new Library will include Australia's first automated document storage and retrieval system. Eighty per cent of Macquarie's collection will be housed in this automated collection system, retrieved by robots at the click of a button and delivered to the user within minutes.
