Bachelor of Creative Arts

Bachelor of Creative Arts student Amelia Ditcham

The Bachelor of Creative Arts (BCA or BCA International) is a multidisciplinary arts management degree that is designed for those seeking employment in the arts, associated organisations or public services. It is especially relevant to those who plan a career involving arts administration.

The program addresses the needs of artists, arts managers and entrepreneurs in the fields of theatre, film, publishing, galleries, museums and the music industry. Graduates of the BCA have gained employment in a variety of private and public arts related businesses, funding organisations, regional arts centres and educational institutions.

Students complete a coherent study in one of the following artistic fields: drama, creative writing, music or visual arts and multimedia. The multidisciplinary approach also draws from established disciplines such as cultural studies, drama, music, anthropology, sociology, philosophy and education (early childhood, primary, secondary). Areas of professional studies such as law, management, economics, marketing and business administration also have subjects available to BCA students.

The degree program is firmly linked to the arts industry with students completing a work placement at an organisation or business in cities such as Sydney, New York, London, Paris, Montreal, Dublin, Los Angeles or Amsterdam.

Second Year student Amelia Ditcham is high in her praise of the Bachelor of Creative Arts.

“Macquarie University offers a unique creative arts program,” she says. “I didn’t want to do a pure drama course and loved the fact that the BA in Creative Arts covers all aspects of performance as well as providing management skills. My program is so diverse, I can go from a three hour drama practical to a lecture on performance theory.”

Amelia’s link to Macquarie dates back to her days as a student at Hornsby Girls High when she did work experience at the Art Gallery. “I really felt comfortable about coming to Macquarie to study, I love the grounds, the sculpture park, the welcoming environment and the great drama program,” she says.

“I met with students from Sydney and NSW unis the other night and it’s amazing how many people don’t realise that we have drama and TV studios at Macquarie. We have such a strong drama program here as well as our known strengths in science, history and business,” she says.

Amelia who is in her second year of study, plans to complete an honours year in English before looking for her niche in the industry.  She hopes that the contacts she makes during an internship during her third year of study will hold her in good stead for the future.
