Macquarie University welcomed new Vice-Chancellor, Professor Steven Schwartz, in February. He succeeds Professor Di Yerbury, who was the University's VC for 19 years. Keen for Macquarie to remain one of Australia's leading research universities, Professor Schwartz intends to build on Macquarie's research strengths.

Macquarie University has taken over administration of one of Australia's oldest and most prestigious specialist visual arts institutes - the National Art School, located in Darlinghurst. The merger will allow the NAS to uphold the artistic and academic integrity of its distinctive programs and methodologies and will give the University its first visual arts department.

Melbourne-based artist Chris Henschke took out the $15,000 first prize in the inaugural Macquarie University World Year of Physics Art Prize with his piece HyperCollider.

An innovative fusion of art and science, the Prize showcased the central role physics plays in science, technology and life. Artists were required to interpret a collection of resource sheets that visually represented the research and teaching activities of the Department of Physics.
